Building An Altar

When the people of Israel crossed the Jordan they were to set up for themselves large stones, coat them with lime and write on them the words of the law. What is the purpose of coating the stones with lime? What I found was that in recent days lime was used to make mortar and a coating for masonry to preserve protect it. While I don’t know exactly why God told the Israelites to coat the stones, was there a property of the stones which, unless coated, would erode faster?

God also told Israel to build an altar of uncut stones. Again, why stone that had not been worked? Not only do I not know the answer to these questions, but I don’t even have enough knowledge to speculate! I looked at a few online commentaries for these verses
