The Glory Rightly Given
When Israel was taking the land of Canaan, the book of Joshua tells us that the Israelites repeatedly attributed their victory to the LORD. That is so unlike most men. Most men would take the glory for the battle to themselves. “We won!”, they would say; but not Israel. Israel rightly gave the victory to the LORD their God.
Why do I say rightly? Read Joshua 10:11, “As they fled from before Israel, while they were at the descent of Beth-horon, the LORD threw large stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died; there were more who died from the hailstones than those whom the sons of Israel killed with the sword.” While Israel was required to fight the battles, the outcomes belonged to God.
This is true even today! We may put forth our best effort but the outcome belongs to the Lord. We as a nation, a church and a people forget that! When we remember to give thanks, do we remember to give thanks for all the outcomes of our efforts? Many people think that their petty accomplishments are too small for God to take notice of. They don’t realize that God already noticed and that fact that it is an accomplishment rather than a failure is God’s doing.
Remember the words of the apostle, “In all things, give thanks.”
